Healing the whole self
Healing begins with feeling safe enough to be seen, heard and understood.
Therapeutic counselling offers the opportunity to explore our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and experiences with curiosity and compassion. As we begin to understand ourselves more deeply, we can develop greater self-awareness, build self-compassion and make more conscious choices about how we respond to life's challenges. Understanding creates the foundation for healing.
Over the years, I have become increasingly aware that healing doesn't happen solely through talking. Conversation can bring insight, understanding and meaning, but there are times when words simply aren't enough.
I have witnessed clients experience profound shifts when they gently tune into their body's wisdom. A sensation, an image or an unexpected emotion can become the doorway to a part of themselves that has waited years to be seen with compassion. These moments cannot be forced or predicted, but when they arise they can transform the therapeutic journey.
Our minds tell us one story; our bodies often tell us another. Neither is right nor wrong. Together they offer a richer, more complete understanding of who we are and what we have experienced.
Somatic awareness invites us to slow down and listen to the body. This may be as simple as noticing sensations, tension, warmth, movement or emotion as they arise. Sometimes this confirms what we already know. At other times it can gently reveal feelings, images or younger parts of ourselves that have never been fully acknowledged or given the care they needed. When approached with gentleness and safety, these experiences can open the door to profound healing and self-compassion.
For those who feel drawn to it, I also offer Reiki as an optional part of the therapeutic process. Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or hands-near) energy practice that can encourage deep relaxation, grounding and a sense of inner calm. Many clients find that this quietens the constant activity of the thinking mind, making it easier to notice what their body is communicating and creating space for deeper reflection. Some experience Reiki as restorative, while others experience it as something deeply spiritual. Whatever your beliefs, Reiki is always offered respectfully, without expectation, and only with your consent.
I do not see counselling, somatic awareness and Reiki as separate approaches, but as different ways of listening. Healing comes through relationship, insight and compassion, but the mind is only one source of information. The body also carries our lived experience. When we listen to both with curiosity and kindness, we begin to understand ourselves more fully, and from that understanding healing can emerge.
Above all, I believe we are not broken. Life's experiences, particularly those that overwhelm us, can lead us to disconnect from parts of ourselves in order to survive. These protective responses often serve us well at the time, but later they may leave us feeling lost, stuck or unable to fully experience ourselves or others.
For me, therapy is about creating a safe, compassionate space where you can gently reconnect with the parts of yourself that have been hidden, silenced or forgotten. As those parts are welcomed back with curiosity, kindness and acceptance, you begin to feel more whole, more authentic and more connected.
In many ways, this is what Belong means to me. Before we can truly feel that we belong in the world or with others, we first need to rediscover a sense of belonging within ourselves. My hope is that our work together helps you find your way back to that place.
